Warning: my brother in law said my shed ramp was "a woodworking crime" and honestly he was right
He pointed at the 2x4 I used as a ramp edge and said the grain was running the wrong way, which I figured was just him being picky until it split under a wheelbarrow load a few days later. Now I am out $18 in lumber and a Saturday redoing it. Any of you run into grain direction biting you on a small project like a ramp or step?

Did you ever hear the trick about reading the grain like a bundle of straws? I saw a video where a guy bent a scrap board and showed how it snaps way easier along the grain lines than across them, and that stuck with me. For a ramp edge the 2x4 is basically a lever, so if the grain runs lengthwise it peels apart right where the wheel hits. I had the same thing happen on a garden step and could not figure out why it kept cracking. Now I look at the end grain before I cut anything that takes weight. Sounds like your brother in law was just early with the news.
