Spent $85 on a cheap laser level for my deck posts and it saved me a whole weekend of redoing them
I was about to rent a rotary laser from the tool shop down on Vine for $60 a day, but my neighbor said just grab a $85 cross line laser and try it on the posts. I figured it would be junk but it held dead level across 4 posts over a 14 foot span, and I got all my stringers set in one afternoon instead of two. The part that saved me was the self leveling, because my yard slopes about 5 inches from the house to the fence and eyeballing it would've been a mess. The cheap tripod that came with it did wobble on me once, so I zip tied it to a stake and that fixed it. Curious if anyone here has run one of these on a bigger span, like 25 feet or more, because I'm worried the beam drifts at that distance.
A buddy of mine ran a cheap cross line on a 30 foot fence line and the beam was fine up close but got fuzzy and wide at the far end. He ended up splitting it, setting a mark at 15 feet and re-leveling off that, which kept everything true. For a deck span that long I'd do the same thing, just break it into two passes so drift never stacks up.
