Put in a 4x8 raised bed in Lincoln last April, and the dirt finally looks alive now

Honestly I built this thing out of plain 2x10s from the lumber yard, nothing special, and filled it with a mix of topsoil and compost. For the first 6 weeks it looked like dead gray dust and I figured I messed up the ratio. Last week I pulled back the mulch and there were earthworms everywhere plus the soil was dark and crumbly instead of hard as a rock. I think the difference was just time and watering deep twice a week instead of a little bit every day. Anyone else see their bed flip like that in the first season, or did yours take longer to come around?
