Patio slab framing with 2x4 stakes beat my $90 stake kit and I still feel weird about it
Poured a 12x14 slab last Saturday using scrap 2x4 cut into stakes and a string line instead of the screw-in stake kit everyone in my Facebook group swears by, and the form came out dead level on the first try while my neighbor's kit build was 3/4 inch off. Did I just get lucky with my soil or is the whole stake kit thing overblown for small pours?
Used to be all in on the screw stake kits until I helped my brother do a 10x12 pour last month and his kit stakes kept spinning out in the soft dirt near the edges. We ended up pounding regular 2x4 scrap in with a sledge and they held way better, no wobble at all when we screeded. Honestly the kits seem fine for hard packed ground but most backyard soil just is not that. The string line does not lie either, the boards tell you everything you need to know. My brother still uses the kit on his driveway pours but for anything in a yard with fill dirt or loose stuff, wood stakes just win.
