My pallet wood fence looked great until the frost pushed it 4 inches
Built a pallet wood privacy fence along the north side of my yard in Columbus last fall. Looked fantastic for about 6 weeks, real rustic charm and all. Then we got that hard freeze in January and the posts started heaving like crazy. One morning I walked out with coffee and the whole middle section was tilted at a weird angle, not falling but definitely leaning. Turns out I only buried the posts 18 inches deep, way too shallow for our clay soil. I pulled everything down over a weekend, dug the holes down to 3 feet, and packed in gravel for drainage before resetting the posts. It's held solid through two more winters now, so the lesson stuck. Anyone else fight frost heave on a backyard build, and what depth finally worked for you?
