My neighbor walked over and said my pergola posts were set too shallow

He was right, I only buried them 18 inches and our clay soil here in Ohio heaves bad every winter, so I dug em out and went 36 inches deep instead, anyone else get free engineering advice from a nosy neighbor?

Wait, did this guy just watch you digging or did he come over while you were still setting the posts? (I'm trying to figure out if he's the type who stands around critiquing your work with a beer in his hand or someone who actually knows what he's talking about). Our old neighbor in Minnesota would give unsolicited advice about our deck footings - turns out he was a retired contractor who saved us from a major frost heave disaster. Did your neighbor stick around to help with the redigging or was he just a drive-by critic with a measuring tape?
