Found out my local soil is clay heavy after a simple jar test yesterday
been digging in my backyard for 3 years and never knew. Just shook some dirt in a mason jar with water and after 24 hours the layers showed 60% clay. explains why everything drains so slow. has anyone else been surprised by their soil test results?

60% clay is rough. Are you doing raised beds or trying to amend that stuff? I've heard gypsum can help break up clay but it takes forever and you have to do it every season. My cousin tried adding sand to his clay soil and ended up with something like concrete, so definitely don't do that.

Totally agree with you there. I tried working clay soil in my backyard one year and it was like wrestling with wet concrete every time I dug a hole. Ended up just doing a bunch of small raised beds instead and it saved me so much headache.
