Appreciation post: the $20 bottle of fence stain from the hardware store, I was sure it would peel in a month but it's held up through two winters now.
What convinced me was walking out there last spring after a thaw and finding the boards still looked the same as the day I brushed it on, no cracking or fading at all, has anyone else tried the cheap stuff and been surprised?

henderson.mason asked about treating the wood first, and that's actually a HUGE part of the story. That cheap stain went on some old fence boards I'd already pressure washed and let dry for a few days, so it wasn't totally raw wood but I didn't use any primer or special prep. The funny thing is I had a leftover bucket of the expensive stuff from my neighbor sitting in my garage for two years, and it was so thick I gave up on it. The cheap stuff was watery and I figured it would just soak in and vanish, but it actually bonded to the wood better than that expensive gunk ever did. Now I'm starting to think half the price difference is just marketing hype and fancy labels on the can.

Yo wait, did you treat the wood at all before you slapped that cheap stuff on?
