Spent $400 on a fancy GPS unit, then went back to paper maps. Who else overpaid?

Used it on a 3 day trip in the Sierras, battery died by day 2 and the screen froze in rain. My $12 laminated map did the job the whole time. Anyone else ditch their expensive gear for the old way?

The real issue is that fancy gear makes you trust the screen more than your own eyes. Paper maps force you to actually pay attention to landmarks and terrain, which is a skill that matters when tech fails. That $400 unit bought you a lesson in redundancy, not a better hiking experience.
