Question about the time I bailed off the Enchantments loop after 3 miles

Two Septembers ago I ignored the permit system and tried to day-hike the full 18 mile Enchantments thru-hike out of the Snow Lakes trailhead, blew out my knee on the descent at 4pm with no headlamp, and had to hitch a ride back to Leavenworth from a stranger, which is why I now refuse to plan any route over 12 miles without a hard turnaround time, so what's your rule for calling it quits?
