My map reading fail on the Lost Coast Trail added a whole extra day
I mean, I thought I knew how to read a tide chart for that section in California, but I got the times wrong by like six hours. We had to camp on a tiny rock shelf above the waterline for a full night, waiting for the tide to go out again. It turned a two day stretch into three, and we ran real low on snacks. Has anyone else messed up a tide schedule that bad on a coastal hike?

That's why I double-check the charts with a ranger now.

Okay but is it really a fail if you got a bonus night of camping? Sounds like an adventure, not a disaster. @noahpark checking with a ranger is smart, but sometimes you just have to roll with a mistake. Running low on snacks is the real crime here, that's the only part I'd call a genuine fail.
