Missed the last legal campsite on the Eagle Rock Loop by 20 minutes and had to night hike 3 miles by headlamp
Got to the Ouachita last Saturday and blew past the campsite marker because my map was folded over on the mileage. I ended up walking 3 more miles in the dark with a dying headlamp to a spot by the creek, and honestly that site was better than the one I planned. Anyone else find their best camps that way, or am I just bad at reading maps?
I read a trip report on Backpacker a while back where the guy said his favorite sites were always the ones he stumbled into after dark. Something about not having a plan makes you just take what the land gives you. That creek spot probably had better water access and fewer people anyway, the marked sites on Eagle Rock get hit hard. Reading a folded map at dusk is basically a rite of passage out there.
