Just realized how sharing trail mix solved my most awkward camp moment

Last summer on the Wonderland Trail, I was stuck sharing a tiny tent site with a complete stranger because of a permit mix up. The silence while setting up our tents was so thick you could cut it with a knife. I finally just offered him some of my weird homemade trail mix with wasabi peas, and we ended up talking for hours about other loop hikes. Who knew a weird snack could turn a tense situation into a trail friend?

Would my burnt granola bars have fixed it or made it worse?

Burnt granola bars add a tough crunch. The charred bits can stick things together in a tight spot. They could have worked out fine.

Gavin asking if burnt bars would fix it or make it worse got me thinking. It's not about the snack itself, but the act of offering something, even if it's a bit messed up. A burnt bar is a funny story to share. That awkward laugh over a failed bake job can break the ice way faster than perfect trail mix, because it makes you seem more human and less like a tense stranger.
