Update: Had to choose between lending my sister $2,000 or setting a boundary yesterday
My sister asked me for $2,000 to cover her rent after she quit her job without notice. I felt awful because she's family and she seemed desperate. But I remembered how she never paid me back the $500 I loaned her two years ago. So I told her no and offered to help her look into local rental assistance programs instead. Has anyone else had to turn down a family member's money request for rent or bills?

Did you bring up that $500 she still owes you? Sometimes you gotta remind them of the past to make the point stick. I did the same thing with my cousin last year, offered to help him budget instead of handing over cash, and he actually figured it out on his own. It stings in the moment but you saved yourself from being stuck in that cycle again.

Nah, setting that boundary was the right call, she already showed she won't pay you back.
