The "just split it evenly" talk with my brother backfired hard last Christmas

My brother and I always split the dinner bill evenly with our parents, but last year I noticed he ordered $45 worth of drinks while I had tap water. I tried to bring it up after dinner and he got super defensive, said I was being cheap. I let it go but now I'm dreading the next family meal because it's gonna happen again. Has anyone figured out a way to have this talk without making it feel like you're attacking someone?
