That time I realized I was the problem in our family money talks

For years I'd sit down with my parents to talk about their retirement plans and it always ended in a fight. I kept trying to push them into giving me exact numbers and spreadsheets because that's how I run my pest control business. Last Christmas my mom finally stopped me mid sentence and said "you're treating this like a board meeting, not a family dinner." That hit me hard because she was right. I was so focused on getting the data I wanted that I forgot they were scared and embarrassed about not having much saved. Now I just ask open questions like "how are you feeling about things" and let them talk without me jumping in with solutions. Has anyone else had that moment where you realized your approach was making the whole conversation worse?

That spreadsheet detail REALLY caught my attention. My dad tried to give me a printed budget once and I could see his hands shaking while he handed it over. It took me way too long to realize that pushing for numbers just made him feel like he was failing as a parent.

Wait till you try leading with "so what's the plan if you run out of money at 85?" and watch them suddenly become very interested in the weather. Honestly, I think the real secret is just nodding and saying "uh huh" until they're ready to talk about something other than the electric bill.
