That moment i realized i was the one making family dinners awkward
I spent 3 years dodging Sunday dinners at my mom's place because i thought she was always passive-aggressive about my job. Last month my sister pulled me aside and said mom's just hurt i never ask about her life, she doesn't care about the career stuff. Has anyone else found out they were reading their parents totally wrong the whole time?

Wait, so you were dodging dinner for 3 years and the whole time she just wanted you to ask how her garden was doing? Man, that is a MASSIVE oops. I've done similar stuff, like thinking my dad was mad about my car being a mess when he was actually just worried I couldn't afford to get it fixed. It's wild how we build these whole stories in our heads and our parents are just sitting there thinking we don't care about their dumb little hobbies.

The thing about "building whole stories in our heads" is a perfect point, because I see people do it with neighbors, coworkers, even the guy at the coffee shop, not just family. We get so caught up in our own little dramas that we forget other people are usually just trying to be decent or share something they care about. Most of the time, the simplest explanation is the one we're too anxious to accept, and then we end up missing out on a bunch of stuff we didn't even know was there.
