That $35 parking ticket changed my mind about lending my brother cash

Drove down to visit my brother in Tacoma last month. He hit me up for $200 to cover his electric bill, said he was short after a car repair. I've always said no to lending him money, we got burned by that whole thing with our mom's credit card years back. But when I pulled into his driveway I saw this brand new $70 fishing rod leaning against his porch. Then he comes out all apologetic about the ticket on his truck, a $35 parking fine he could've paid weeks ago. Something clicked. It wasn't about the bill, it was about him treating me like a bank with no interest. I gave him $40, told him to pay the ticket, and said I'd help him set up a budget if he wanted. He actually took me up on it yesterday. Has anyone else had that moment where you see the small stuff that tells you the real story?
