Rant: the $220 I spent on a family budget meeting is the best money I ever lost
Years back I paid a retired accountant out of Omaha $220 to sit at our kitchen table with my parents and my sister while we finally put every bill on the table, mostly because I knew I'd chicken out if I had to bring it up alone. He made us go one at a time, and my mom cried about a credit card my dad had been hiding for close to two years, which sounds awful but it got everything out in the open in one night instead of three more years of hints. Now that my own kids are older I keep wondering how people ever bring up money with parents who still think it's rude to talk numbers, so how did you all get that first hard talk started?
