Paid $300 for a family mediator and it actually ended the standoff
My brother and I fought for weeks over our mom's 5 acres near Spokane, neither of us would budge. Finally hired a licensed mediator through the courthouse list for $300 split between us, and we settled in one 4 hour session. Funny how a stranger saying the same stuff my wife told me for free suddenly made it click. Has anyone else thrown money at a neutral third party just to get family to listen?

There's something about paying somebody that flips a switch in people's heads. My sister and I had a similar thing over our dad's workshop tools, she wouldn't listen to a word I said, but the moment the estate lawyer repeated the exact same options, she got all reasonable. I think it's because we're wired to think free advice is just someone's opinion, but paid advice feels like it has weight, like it's official. Same with my neighbor who ignored every lawn care tip I gave him for years, then paid a landscaper to tell him the same thing about cutting too short at once. We don't respect free knowledge, we respect the price tag that comes with it. It's dumb, but it works, and it's everywhere if you start looking.
