I used to let my dad borrow money every single month, no questions asked.

For years, it was just what I did. He'd call, say he was short for his car payment or a bill, and I'd send $200. Never kept track. Figured it was family. Then last year, my own car needed new brakes, cost me $800, and I realized I had nothing saved. That was the wake-up call. I sat down and added it all up. Over three years, I'd sent him almost seven grand. I finally told him I couldn't do it anymore. It was the hardest talk I've ever had. He was upset, but I had to set that limit for my own future. How do you handle it when a family member keeps asking after you've said no?

Did you try just saying it's not in the budget anymore? I had to be a broken record for a bit, just repeating the same simple "I can't right now" until it stuck.

Feel you, I used to think that way too.
