Had the money talk with my parents over Christmas dinner and it went better than I expected
I had been putting off this talk for about 2 years because I figured it would turn into a big fight. My parents are both in their late 60s and my dad still works 50 hour weeks at a hardware store in Toledo even though his back is shot. Last Christmas I finally sat them down after dinner and said I would start sending $300 a month to help with bills and they could stop worrying about my student loans. My mom teared up and my dad just nodded and said he appreciated it but didn't want me to feel like I owed them anything. We ended up talking for like 2 hours about their retirement savings and it turns out they have way less put away than I thought. The weird part is I felt closer to them after that one talk than I have in years. Has anyone else had a money talk with parents that went sideways, or did it go smoother than you expected?
My sister and I split our dad's estate two years ago and we still barely talk, so I'm not sold on the whole money talk brings you closer thing. Maybe it works for some people @gray117 but one good chat doesn't undo years of weirdness. Sometimes it just makes things worse once the nice part wears off.
