Borrowed my uncle's truck to move a couch and cracked the tailgate, now he wants $800 for repairs

It happened last Saturday when I was loading a heavy IKEA sofa in his F-150 and the tailgate chain snapped, dropping the whole thing on the concrete - has anyone dealt with family damage claims that feel way overpriced?

Told my cousin the same thing after I dented his tailgate moving a washer, offered to take it to two shops for quotes first. Came back at $350 from a reputable body shop, so we split the difference and he dropped the whole "full replacement" idea. Good chance your uncle's estimate is from a dealership quoting top dollar, get a second opinion before you hand over cash.
