Appreciation post: the 'text first' rule for asking my parents about money
Last month, I had to ask my folks for a loan to fix my car, which felt super awkward. Instead of a big phone call, I sent a short text first saying 'Hey, can we talk about something important later this week?' It gave them time to think and not feel put on the spot. When we did talk, it was way calmer because we were both ready. Has anyone else tried a 'heads-up' text before a tough money talk?

The text buffer is smart, but it only works if your folks actually check their messages. Mine would see that and call me in a panic before I could explain.

Totally did this before asking for help with rent. That little text buffer makes the whole thing feel less like an ambush. It just takes the edge off for everyone.

Used to think sending a text first was overthinking it. Like just call and get it over with, right? But then I had to ask for help with a big vet bill last year. Sending a quick "got something to chat about later" first made a huge difference. My dad didn't jump into lecture mode right away. He had time to process before we actually talked. Changed my mind completely on the whole thing.
