Appreciation post: the $20 voice recorder that saved my holiday dinner

My mom always interrupts me when I try to set holiday boundaries, so last Thanksgiving I brought a cheap digital voice recorder to our dinner. I pressed record before the pie came out and later played back exactly where I said, "I can only stay for two hours this year" and she said, "Well, we'll see how that goes." When I finally played it for her last week, she got quiet for a full minute then laughed and admitted she never hears herself talk. It wasn't about winning an argument, it was about showing her a pattern she didn't know she had. Now she actually asks before adding me to group chats about holiday plans. Has anyone else tried recording a tough family convo just to review it later, and did it backfire or help?
