That $340 test adapter I cheaped out on finally bit me

Last month I needed a quick wiring harness check on a CRJ nacelle and decided to skip the proper Boeing test adapter for a generic pinout I built myself. The build only cost me $45 in parts, but after 20 minutes of chasing a false continuity fault I found the real issue: my homemade adapter had a cracked solder joint on pin 23. The OEM adapter would have caught that in one pass, and now I'm out a full afternoon and looking at a $340 replacement anyway. Has anyone else gambled on a shop-made tool and lost bigger than the savings?
