My old instructor's "clean bench" rule just cost me a $400 connector

Back in A&P school, Mr. Delgado always said "a clean bench means a clean mind" and made us wipe down everything before touching avionics. I thought it was overkill. Last month I was swapping a pitot static adapter on a Citation and left a tiny bit of metal shaving from drilling a bracket. It got into the connector pins and shorted the whole air data computer. My boss handed me the repair bill. That rule was right. Anyone else have a boring habit they skipped and paid for later?
