I just logged my 500th wire termination and realized something about my old habits

It hit me that for years I was over-torquing every single D-sub connector, probably from a mix of nerves and bad early training. Now I keep a calibrated torque driver right on my bench and check it monthly. Anyone else have a simple habit they had to unlearn that saved a ton of time?

Spot on. This is the exact same thing as @gray_patel with the screws. It's a bigger problem where people just use muscle memory instead of the right tool. You see it everywhere, from guys cranking down oil filters to death to people forcing a screw because they picked up the wrong driver. That little bit of extra force never helps and usually just breaks something.

Why do people always think more force is the answer?

Used to strip screws before I got a torque driver too.
