Thought the heat gun trick for small dents was bs, then it saved me on a 2016 Civic bumper
A guy at the shop on 8th in Boise kept telling me to try a heat gun on shallow plastic dents instead of pulling the panel every time and I figured he was just trying to save himself work. Tried it on a scuffed bumper last Friday after I could not get the puller to grab right, hit it with maybe 20 seconds of heat and it popped back out clean. Saved me a full R&I and the customer picked up the car the same afternoon without me having to order a single clip. I still would not use it on anything deep or creased near a seam though. Where do you guys draw the line on heat for plastic panels vs just pulling them?
Same exact thing happened to me last month on a rear quarter on an older Camry. Cracked bumper cover had a soft push in it right above the wheel and my puller kept slipping off because there was nothing solid to grab. Hit it with the heat gun for a bit, worked it from the back side with my thumb and it came right out. Customer never even knew it was there. Totally agree on where you draw the line though, once you get a hard crease or it is anywhere near a seam or a sensor, that plastic gets thin and you can stretch it or burn the paint before you know it. Shallow and soft is the sweet spot, anything sharp or deep I am still pulling the panel.
