The customer who watched me sand for 20 minutes then asked 'is it done yet?'

Had a guy drop off his F-150 for a fender repaint last Tuesday and he just stood in the booth doorway, arms crossed, staring at me block-sanding the primer. After twenty minutes he goes 'so like, how long does this actually take?' and I had to explain that the sanding IS the job, not the paint. Anyone else get customers who think we just spray color and call it a day, or is it just my shop in Columbus?

The customer paid for a paint job, not a sanding seminar. From his side, he sees a truck sitting in a booth for hours and the color not even going on yet. Twenty minutes of watching someone rub paper on primer probably feels like watching grass grow. You know the work matters, but he has zero frame of reference for why prep takes so long. Blame every TV show that makes bodywork look like a thirty minute makeover. Maybe toss him a buffer and let him try it for five minutes next time, he might shut up real fast.
