That old compressor finally quit on me mid-clearcoat

Been running the same 60 gallon unit since I opened my shop near Dayton in 2011. Last Thursday it started knocking like a loose rocker arm, then just died right as I was laying down the third coat on a customer's classic Mustang. Had to call around to three local suppliers before someone could drop off a rental same day. Anyone else had a machine fail at the worst possible moment, or am I just the lucky one?

Machines always seem to have a sixth sense for the worst timing. It's like they wait until you're elbows deep in something that can't be paused, then they just give up. I've seen it with my own equipment, and it's the same story everywhere in trades. Everyone's got that one story about equipment dying right in the middle of the one job that truly mattered. At least you got a rental sorted, so you can finish the Mustang. Sometimes that's all you can ask for.
