Showerthought: Short breaks turned out to be key for my sanding focus

I always believed working straight through showed dedication. After botching a feather edge on a panel from rushing, my boss suggested regular five-minute rests. I started pausing every hour during long prep work. My attention sharpened, and my sanding lines got cleaner. Now I plan breaks into my day, and my quality has improved.

Wow, that totally reminds me of my buddy who refinishes furniture. He was always fighting to get a perfect, glass-smooth finish on this old desk, and he'd just grind for hours straight in his garage. He kept getting these tiny, annoying swirl marks he couldn't see until the stain went on. Finally, another woodworker told him to get up, walk outside, and just breathe for five minutes every forty minutes or so. He felt silly at first, but he tried it. His next coat was way cleaner, just from letting his eyes and brain reset away from all that dust and noise. It completely changed how he tackles big sanding jobs now.

Seriously, my friend who paints learned the same thing after ruining a trim job from staring at it too long.
