Remembering when a piece of cardboard saved a quarter panel blend

Got a 2012 Silverado in last month with a deep scratch on the rear door. The color was a tricky three-stage pearl. I was worried about overspray on the adjacent panel while blending. An old timer I worked with in Dayton years ago always said to use a simple masking trick. I took a big piece of cardboard, cut a hole the exact shape of the blend area, and taped it over the fender. It blocked everything but the precise zone I needed to spray. The blend came out perfect with zero cleanup. Anyone else have a weird masking trick that actually works?

Honestly thought that was just shop lore, but that cardboard trick is actually genius.

Right? I mean it's so simple but it just works.

My buddy saved his engine from a mouse nest with that exact cardboard trick last winter.
