Question about using a cheap vs. a proper infrared lamp for paint curing
I had a job on a 2018 Honda Civic quarter panel repair last month where I decided to try a $80 infrared lamp from a hardware store instead of my usual setup. The paint just would NOT cure right, it stayed tacky for hours and the final finish looked cloudy. I ended up redoing the whole thing with my professional IR lamp, which cost about $450, and the difference was night and day. The proper lamp had a much more even heat spread and the right wavelength, so the clear coat hardened perfectly in under 30 minutes. That cheap unit basically just blasted one spot with heat and left the rest gummy. It cost me an extra half day of work and materials. Has anyone else had a similar experience with trying to save money on curing equipment only to have it backfire?

That "blasted one spot with heat" part is exactly why I stopped using cheap lamps.

It's not just about comfort, it's a real fire risk over time. That focused heat can damage lamp sockets and wiring inside the wall. Paying more upfront is cheaper than a house call from an electrician.
