PSA: Stop buying $40 panel gap tools, a paint stick and a body hammer did the same job on a Civic
Had a 2019 Civic in the bay with the hood sitting proud on the driver side about 5mm after a fender swap, and the gap was driving me nuts. I was about to order one of those fancy gap gauges online for $40 when my old timer coworker Dale (not the shed guy, different Dale) laughed and handed me a wooden paint stir stick and a body hammer. Turns out you slide the stick in the gap to check it even, then tap the hinge or shim it until the stick drags the same on both sides. I spent 20 minutes on it and got the gap to about 1.5mm even all the way down, and the customer never said a word about it. The trick is you feel the drag on the stick before your eye ever catches the gap, so you fix it faster. I've done three more cars since Tuesday with the same stick, still got paint dust on it. Curious if anyone else has a cheap trick that beat the tool, because I'm done spending money on gauges.
