My buddy at the shop in Springfield said 'just mud it' for a quarter panel, but I'm not so sure.

He was talking about a 2017 Civic with a decent dent, not huge but not small either. I saw the car later and the filler was almost a quarter inch thick in spots. I've always been taught that's asking for trouble down the line, especially with temperature swings. Where do you guys draw the line between using filler and just replacing the panel?

Just read that again. A quarter inch of mud on a Civic panel. That's not a repair, that's a sculpture. That much filler is going to crack and pop the first time it gets hot or cold. I draw the line at maybe an eighth of an inch, and even that's pushing it for something that big. At that point you're better off pulling the metal or replacing the part. Your buddy's advice is how you get a job that looks good for six months.
