I used to laugh at guys who block sanded by hand, then Earl showed me his 57 Chevy trunk lid
I've been a DA guy for 12 years and always thought hand blocking was slow old timer stuff until Earl, a retired painter from Toledo, had me feel the trunk lid on his 57 Chevy he did in 1998. Running my palm across it, that panel was flat in a way my 6 inch DA never gets, especially around the curves where it matters. So for you guys shooting clear on a daily driver, is hand blocking really worth the extra hours or am I just chasing a level of flat that nobody paying $3,000 a panel actually notices?
That trunk lid story hits home because my old boss made me block a hood by hand before he'd let me touch a gun, and I hated every second of it until I felt the difference. The flat you get from a block shows up most in the reflection after clear, those long straight lines stay dead straight instead of wiggling like a funhouse mirror. For a 3k driver job most guys won't notice, but the ones who do are the ones who pay for the next one.
