Hot take: I think the $300 I spent on a dedicated paint thickness gauge was a complete waste for my small shop.

Everyone said it was essential for blending, but I've matched panels perfectly for a decade just by eye and feel, so has anyone else skipped this tool and been fine?

Heard a guy on a podcast say he only uses one for insurance jobs now. Said it's more for covering your butt than for the actual match.

My gauge paid for itself in under a month when a customer tried to sue me.

Yeah, baker.riley is spot on. I know a few guys who basically treat it like a receipt printer for insurance work, just to have a number in the file. It's not about the paint, it's about the paperwork. If a customer questions a blend later, you can point to the gauge reading and say the panel was within spec.

Even my bathroom scale lies to me, so idk why I'd trust a paint gauge.
