Customer said my welds looked like bird droppings

Old guy brings in a rusty fender, watches me tack it up, then says that to my face. I got defensive but stepped back and looked, he was right. Switched to shorter stitch passes and let things cool between each one, cleaner beads and zero warpage on the next job. Anyone else get humbled by a customer with fresh eyes?
