Update: drove 90 minutes to a dark sky spot in Door County and the clouds rolled in at 11pm
Last Friday I packed up my 8 inch dob and drove from Green Bay up to Newport State Park because the forecast said clear skies all night. Got set up around 9, got maybe 20 good minutes of the Orion Nebula, and then a wall of clouds came in off the lake and just parked there. Sat in my car until 1am hoping it would break up and it never did. Anyone got a good trick for reading cloud forecasts for lake-effect nights, or do I just need to stop trusting the apps?
I used to just trust Clear Outside and call it good, but after getting burned three times in a row near the lake I started checking the NWS point forecast for cloud cover plus wind direction, since anything off the lake means fog and clouds. Now I mostly plan backup nights instead of chasing perfect ones.
