My uncle's casual comment about my moon photo made me look at framing totally different
He just said 'it's too centered, like a bulls-eye' and walked off. I've been obsessed with rule of thirds ever since, has anyone else had a random relative completely change how you shoot?

Rule of thirds is the gateway drug. Once you mess with it, you start breaking it on purpose. For moon shots specifically, try putting it in the bottom third with some tree branches or power lines in the top. Gives it scale and makes the shot less flat. Your uncle did you a solid, even if he was blunt about it.

Fair enough, but I've honestly never been a rule of thirds fan for moons. In my experience centering the moon in the frame with a lot of dark space around it feels more natural, like you're actually looking at it in the sky. The branches and power lines trick works sometimes, but it can also look like you couldn't find a clean shot and settled. Your mileage may vary, but I've gotten way more keepers just letting the moon be the lone subject with a simple composition.
