My grandpa's star chart advice finally clicked after 14 years. He told me back in 2011 to always shoot the moon with my telescope before trying deep sky objects, said it builds calibration habits. Last month at Cherry Springs State Park I finally understood, the glow messes with your eyes and focus more than any book explains. I wasted a whole night on Andromeda before realizing his tip was about patience, not the moon itself. Anyone else get a piece of advice that made zero sense until a specific night ruined your session?

Grandpas always drop wisdom like that and you just nod along for a decade plus. Same thing happened with my dad and polar alignment, he kept saying do it every single time no matter what. I skipped it one night thinking I was too smart and spent two hours chasing a target that kept drifting. Now I do it even for quick looks and its annoying but it works. Old folks know whats up because they already made all the dumb mistakes for us.
