I keep seeing people call the Orion Nebula a galaxy and it's driving me nuts
It's a nebula, not a galaxy, and the difference matters because one is a stellar nursery inside our own Milky Way and the other is a whole separate island of stars. I learned this from a planetarium show at the Griffith Observatory years ago. How do you guys explain the difference to new folks without sounding like a know-it-all?

Notice this happens with all kinds of stuff, like mixing up climate and weather. People just grab the closest word they know, even if it's wrong. Makes you want to gently correct them with a simple picture, like comparing a cloud in the sky to the whole atmosphere.

That planetarium show sounds cool. It's funny how stuff like that sticks with you for years.

Honestly I just keep it simple and say "a galaxy is a city of stars, a nebula is a construction site for new ones." Gets the point across without sounding like a textbook.
