Changed my filters after a buddy's moon shot blew mine away
A guy from my local club told me to try a UHC filter for nebula photos, and I always thought those were just gimmicks for beginners. He let me borrow his for an hour at a dark site in Sedona and the detail in the Orion Nebula was honestly shocking compared to my unfiltered shot. Has anyone else had a specific filter totally change how you approach a target?

Totally get what you mean about filters feeling like a gimmick. I had the same thing happen with my club when someone lent me a light pollution filter for shooting from my driveway in the city. I was blown away by how much more detail popped out in the Andromeda Galaxy, like the dust lanes actually showed up instead of just a bright blob. UHC filters are no joke for nebula work, especially from a dark site like Sedona. Your buddy's moon shot probably had similar contrast gains, it's wild how much cutting that specific wavelength can do. I haven't used one for the moon myself but I bet the same principle applies to cutting scattered light.
