Spent a week on a dig in Arizona only to find modern trash at the bottom of the unit

We were so sure we'd hit a new layer of Hohokam artifacts, but it was just a crushed soda can from the 1980s. The whole crew's mood just deflated after that. Has a find ever completely killed the vibe on your site like that?

Honestly, that sounds like a cool find to me. That can is its own piece of history now, a time capsule from forty years ago. It tells you something about who was in that spot before your crew, and that's the whole point of digging. Getting hung up on what you wanted to find just means you missed the real story.

Totally agree. I once dug up a weird plastic toy from the 80s and it was way more interesting than the coins I was after. The unexpected stuff usually has the better story behind it.
