PSA: My old metal detector gave up the ghost right over what might have been a signal
I was out at this old farm field near Springfield last weekend, a spot I've checked before with my trusty White's machine. It's from the late 90s, but it's always been solid. I got a faint, jumpy tone and was slowly working the pinpointer coil over the spot when the whole unit just died. No warning, no flicker, just dead silence. I changed the batteries, checked all the connections, even gave it a little tap, but nothing. It felt like losing a partner mid-conversation. I had to mark the spot with a bright orange flag and walk back to the car empty-handed, which was a real bummer. Now I'm stuck deciding if I should try to get it fixed, which could cost more than it's worth, or finally upgrade. Has anyone else had a detector fail in the field, and what did you end up doing?

I used to believe fixing old gear was always worth it. My own detector died in a creek bed last year and the repair quote was crazy. I just bit the bullet and bought a new one.

Read an article that said sometimes repairs cost more than the gear is even worth. I mean, if the quote is wild, buying new just makes sense. Idk, maybe it's just me but I'd probably do the same thing.
