Passed on a $60 museum dig pass in Cortez, drove to a free canyon site nearby instead
Two summers back I was in Cortez, Colorado and had one day free, so I stood at the counter of a small heritage center trying to pick between a guided dig experience for $60 or just driving out to a canyon site a ranger marked on my map for nothing. I went with the free one because the pass only gave you two hours and I wanted to poke around longer. Turned out the canyon had a low rock wall and some faded pictographs that nobody was standing around explaining, which honestly made it stick with me more. The ranger I talked to after said the paid digs mostly pull pottery shards, so I might have missed the better stuff. Has anyone done both and can tell me if the guided version is worth the money?
