Had to change my whole dig plan after that Roman site in Bath
Was working a trench in Bath last spring and realized my grid system was missing features because I was too focused on topsoil layers. A volunteer pointed out a dark patch I'd walked past three times, turned out to be a hypocaust foundation. How do you guys adjust mid dig when your initial strategy is clearly missing stuff?

Dark patch I'd walked past three times" happens to everyone. Trust the volunteers, they see things we miss.

Litter picking groups see things differently cause they're actively looking. But I've found stuff in plain sight after weeks of walking the same route. Last month I spotted a smashed phone under a bush I'd passed maybe 15 times. It was just luck I happened to glance at the right moment. Volunteers do catch a lot more than the average person, but I think people underestimate how much random chance plays a part.

Started turning on my phone light and looking at the ground from different angles. Made a huge difference, suddenly stuff that just looked like a shadow popped right out.
