Found a 1936 mercury dime in my grandpa's garden bed 2 feet from the porch, got me thinking about what else is under there
Two weekends ago I was pulling weeds at my grandpa's place outside Amarillo and turned up a 1936 mercury dime about 4 inches down, right where he used to hang his hose. It hit me that he gardened that same little patch for 40 odd years and nobody ever dug deeper than a trowel, so the yard is basically an untouched site with a known date range. Is it worth doing a proper grid and sifting that bed before I plant anything, or do I just keep eyeballing it every spring?
Why go full grid on a flower bed when a coin could be anywhere? A dime at 4 inches means stuff sank or got kicked around for decades, so a neat 1 foot square dig might miss everything a foot to the left. Just grab a pinpointer and a hand sifter and hit it hard for one afternoon. If you start pulling silver or old buttons, sure, then do it right with string lines and a bucket. Otherwise you'll spend three weekends mapping dirt and find two rusty nails and a bottle cap. Plant your tomatoes and keep the detector leaning by the porch.
