Digging last summer, we hit a grave site. Local people asked us to stop, but our grant said we had to dig it all up. Felt wrong.

Hey, did the grant actually say you had to ignore the local people? Lots of times those grants have rules about talking to communities first. Like, I heard about a project that stopped when they found bones and had to get okay from family groups. If folks asked you to stop, maybe there was a clause to discuss it or change plans. That gut feeling it was wrong might mean the grant wasn't clear or someone messed up.

Talked to our funder and got the grant changed to protect the site. Sometimes you just have to push back.

Robertc44's point about family groups reminds me that repatriation laws exist for exactly this kind of situation.
